Summer Volunteer Opportunities at the Ronald McDonald House

The Science Students’ Council is a proud supporter of the Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home for out-of-town families of seriously ill or injured children who are in London receiving medical treatment for their child.

The Ronald McDonald House is currently in need of weekend volunteers for the following shifts: Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-1pm, 1-4pm, 4-6pm, and 6-9pm

In addition, they are looking to recruit volunteers interested in hosting Saturday movie nights this summer. Movies will run from 6:30pm to approximately 8:30pm. Volunteers are required to supervise families watching the movies and to serve popcorn, etc.

Lastly, a unique opportunity for science students – The Ronald McDonald House is looking for 1-2 volunteers to host “Science Hour” for children staying at the house during the summer. The day and time is flexible with your schedule, but would need to be consistent each week.

All volunteers require a Police Check and TB test, if you have had one done in the last year – a copy of that is just fine. All volunteers are required to complete a volunteer interview and one time orientation session.

The Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario is located at 740 Baseline Road East (behind Victoria Hospital) and is accessible via the 6 Richmond LTC route

Your Science Students’ Council Presents: Bill Nye the Science Guy at Western

We are very excited to announce that your Science Students’ Council is bringing Bill Nye (the Science Guy) to Western on November 20th, 2012, live at Alumni Hall for one of the most widely anticipated speaker engagements at Western this year.

Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining and access

ible is something Bill has been doing most of his life.

He is an international phenomenon that is known by almost every student because of his famous television show and popular “Bill Nye the Science Guy” theme song. This is an event that is sure to bring back childhood memories and evoke inspiration for the future. There is absolutely no way you can miss this event. We are so excited for Western students to be able to experience this along with us.

By combining his love of science with his flair for comedy, he has had profound success starring in educational videos that are still used to instruct people of all ages. Learning from a speaker with the caliber of Bill Nye is the natural addition to that broader educational experience that we value and seek to deliver to Western’s undergraduate students. Not only will this serve to enrich the environment at Western, but also the broader community through drawing talented individuals inspired by science to our city to learn and discover.

He will be delivering a speech followed by a question and answer period.

Tickets:

General Admission – tickets can be purchased starting October 15th on our website at westernbillnye.ca or at Western Connections in the basement of the UCC. Tickets may be purchased by anyone with no restrictions on age or affiliation (this includes faculty and members of the London community)

$20 student | $30 non-student (+HST)

Limited Pre-sale – There are also a limited number of pre-sale tickets being sold between October 9th and October 12th in front of Taylor Library in Natural Sciences Centre for Western students. Because of the overwhelming interest we have limited it to 2 tickets per person. Each individual will only be able to buy 2 tickets and will be required to present their student card to buy their ticket(s).
