Summer Volunteer Opportunities at the Ronald McDonald House

The Science Students’ Council is a proud supporter of the Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home for out-of-town families of seriously ill or injured children who are in London receiving medical treatment for their child.

The Ronald McDonald House is currently in need of weekend volunteers for the following shifts: Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-1pm, 1-4pm, 4-6pm, and 6-9pm

In addition, they are looking to recruit volunteers interested in hosting Saturday movie nights this summer. Movies will run from 6:30pm to approximately 8:30pm. Volunteers are required to supervise families watching the movies and to serve popcorn, etc.

Lastly, a unique opportunity for science students – The Ronald McDonald House is looking for 1-2 volunteers to host “Science Hour” for children staying at the house during the summer. The day and time is flexible with your schedule, but would need to be consistent each week.

All volunteers require a Police Check and TB test, if you have had one done in the last year – a copy of that is just fine. All volunteers are required to complete a volunteer interview and one time orientation session.

The Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario is located at 740 Baseline Road East (behind Victoria Hospital) and is accessible via the 6 Richmond LTC route

It’s a new year (get excited) – O-week 2012 + getting involved

There are less than 2 weeks until Orientation Week. Your 2012-2013 Science Students’ Council is incredibly excited for both O-week as well as the beginning of the new year.  We’ve been working hard over the summer, all starting with our summer council training weekend (check out photos here).

Let’s talk O-week. You’ve chosen your program. You’ve chosen your courses (if you’re still having trouble, make sure to check out sciwiki.ca). You’ve likely been to SAO. So now comes the best part – a week where you meet thousands of unique individuals and discover what Western is really all about. If you have not yet checked out the o-week website yet, do so (oweek.ca), and get acquainted with the events, residences, concert bands, and most of all, the incredible science soph team.

The new year is about YOU. Many of you are thinking of getting involved, and the Science Students’ Council offers the following ways to do so.

  • Becoming a First-year Representative (we elect 5 first year reps). Nomination forms will come out in September so once they do, fill one out and bring it to our office (NS 108). More details to come, so don’t worry.
  • Other open positions on the Science Students’ Council. We are currently searching for an Upper year Medical Science Representative so if you are in 3rd or 4th year of a BMsc, this position is for you.
  • Becoming an SSC Committee member. The SSC has 7 committees comprised of science students (committee descriptions can be found here: http://westernssc.ca/gettinginvolved.html). Applications will be out in September so keep an eye out for them. Members can be of any year of study!
  • Becoming a Current editor. Our very own SSC Newspaper, The Current, needs to chose it’s Features, Creative, Compilation, and Outreach editors for the 2012-2013 year. More information can be found on our website here: http://westernssc.ca/thecurrent.html.

That is all for now. First years – GET PUMPED. Upper years – enjoy that extra week of vacation, but we are sure there should is no shortage of getting pumped for you too. Please e-mail us at [email protected] if you have any questions!
