The Science Students' Council is excited to introduce six non-monetary awards to science students who have excelled in areas outside of their studies! The following awards were created to recognize the amazing achievements of Western Science Students:

  • Academic Contributions
  • Community Involvement
  • Science Reporting 
  • Peer Support
  • Volunteerism
  • Perseverance

Applications are available under the 'Get Involved' tab >> 'Documents'

Submit an application or nominate a friend by April 6th. Please email your applications to: awards@westernssc.ca. Successful candidates will be contacted, and invited to an awards ceremony on April 8th!

Come out to the Multifaith Space (UCC 269) on Thursday, February 13th for a FREE Yoga De-Stress Session hosted by the Charity Committee! There will be two classes: 6:00pm and 7:00pm!

We will be accepting optional donations for the Ronald McDonald House Southwestern Ontario – a home for out-of-town families of seriously-ill or injured children who are in London receiving medical treatment for their child!

A limited number of yoga mats will be provided – students are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat to ensure a spot!

The SSC's various student-led committees had their first meetings this past week. Students are involved in lobbying to academic authorities, planning and implementing events and initiatives, finance, and promotion/marketing.

As well, committee members assist in constructing The Current, the SSC's official newspaper, co-ordinating charity strategies and community outreach.

Details: Every year the Faculty of Science sends in a strategic plan to the central office, and we are looking for the new artwork to be the face of SCIENCE. If you have artistic skills and/or know your way around Photoshop or any other design program, consider creating a small design and/or taking a photograph that describes "What does Western Science mean to you" 

The only rule: Submissions must be 8.5 x 11"

Cash prize for the chosen submission: $200

 With the Impact Awards, the Science Students’ Council recognizes students who accomplish its mission of enhancing the educational experience and quality of life for themselves and their peers. There are four Impact Awards as follows:

  •  Clement Yung Award for Excellence (1 at $3,500)
  •  Science Students’ Council Impact Award of Merit (BMSc; 1 at $1,500)
  •  Science Students’ Council Impact Award of Merit (BSc; 1 at $1,500)  
  •  Science Students’ Council Impact Award of Merit (BMSc or BSc; 1 at $1,500)

Locker Rentals

Lessen thy backpack burden! During the Fall semester, the Science Students’ Council oversees the sales of locker rentals located in the Natural Sciences Centre. 

Rent a locker from the SSC office (Room 108 in Nat Sci) starting on Wednesday September 11th at 9:30am.

Pro Tip: Lockers often sell out, so don’t wait!  

Fees:

Single Term (Fall or Winter): $25/term

Full Academic Year (until April 30th): $40 

Since you’ll be stopping by anyways, bring some extra cash and grab one of the rad tanks from our new line. They’re only $20 and going fast.

A message from your head soph, Filipe Desouza

Hello Western Science Class of 2017!

You are about to embark on an intergalactic expedition. During the first week of September, you will be entering the GalaxSci, your first year Science experience.
Myself and 75 other upper year volunteers called sophs will be serving as your navigators throughout O-Week and the academic year. Think of us as your go-to friend who can help you in regards to Western, the Faculty of Science or even just life in general. Along with the Science Students’ Council, we are all here to make sure that the upcoming year is absolutely unreal.
Just like outer space, your first year at Western might seem vast and confusing but with our help, you will be able to navigate easily through the GalaxSci. Make sure to buckle up and prepare for lift off because this is going to be a journey to remember.

Be on the lookout for the bimonthly scientific publication compiled by The Current Editor-in-Chief Caitlin Martin Newnham. Applications for editorial positions will be posted in the 'documents' section once they are available, and will be due in late September. Become a part of the intellectual world that is scientific journalism, and apply your writing skills and talents towards publication in a newspaper. Artistic individuals and those with a funny bone are also encouraged to apply for a comic editor position. 

Amongst other opportunities, you will have the chance to:

  • Interview and engage Western professors regarding their individual research and teaching strategies
  • Compile and write articles on current scientific news/phenomena/anomalies
  • Gain publication experience and develop your written and verbal communication skills
  • Learn and work with computer programs Adobe inDesign and Photoshop

July 8th - 9th. SSC TRAINING WEEKEND 

 

Your Science Students' Council recently held their annual summer training weekend from July 8th - 9th in the UCC. Among topics discussed were the generation of a new website, event and marketing proposals and possible partnership with external student groups. Small and creative bonding games were played among members, who then had a classy evening at Jack Astor's in London.
